We have already hosted three meetings and established an Organizing Committee. Many of you asked FAQs which are included below as well as the benefits of Unionization.

Benefits of Unionization:

  • Codify existing LT Handbook treatment like wages, holidays, accrued time off, pension levels, health care and other practices the employer has but is NOT required to continue
  • Establish clear seniority rights and an understandable process for layoffs
  • Protect individuals from retaliatory behavior or individual targeting for cuts
  • Negotiate predictable wage increases
  • Prevent and punish retaliatory behavior, targeting and unharmonious working conditions
  • Strength in numbers, power in unity of purpose

FAQs

1) Do leadership team members who don’t join still benefit from representation?

Yes from collective salary, no from individual representation because of Management association status

2) What can be bargained? And what cannot?

Pension

Salary

Layoff Process

On-call pay

Seniority Rights

Time off

Premium Pays

Professional Development funds and reimbursements

Vacation

Many others

What cannot be negotiated are called permissive subjects of bargaining and include - hiring back laid off colleagues, parking placement, cubicle or offices assignments etc. These CAN be bargained but are not mandatory so the employer could refuse.

3) What in LT handbook isn’t currently being followed?

Many items - currently a raise of 2.5% raise ACE and SEIU that is not being extended to the LT. There are talks of wage cuts with no benefit and further layoffs.

4) When will the superintendent learn who filled out cards?

Only when and if we reach our 67% number - and we file for recognition

5) Do I need to Supervise or not supervise to join?

No - CEMA represents many individual contributors that do not supervise staff as well as management who do.

6) What happens if people are designated confidential? What is confidential?

Confidential are staff that the employer states are essential to the employer negotiating contracts with unionized employees and have access to sensitive and extensive personnel and financial records. The Union can appeal such designations we find unreasonable to PERB (Public Employee Relations Board) who will issue a decision on overreach by the employer. CEMA has won these in the past. Clearly the Superintendent and Cabinet are confidential / executive.
